Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis Gao, Tang & Wang, 1999

Remarks

  • Collection:   Lee Garrison
  • Formation:  Lower Yixian Formation
  • Location:     Liaoning Province, China

General Info

Synonyms (older names and misidentifications in the literature)

  • 1999 Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis Gao, Tang & Wang

  • 1999 Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis Li, Zhang & Li

  • 2001 Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis Gao, Tang & Wang; Smith & Harris

  • It's interesting that the two groups researching this species did not know that one was working off of the positive impression while the other was working off of the negative from the same specimen.

  • They published on it about the same time, but Gao, Tang, and Wang got there first so Hyphalosaurus takes priority over Sinohydrosaurus (see Smith & Harris, 2001 below).

Stratigraphic Occurrence

  • Lower Yixian Formation

Age

  • Probable Neocomian age (very early Cretaceous).  The exact age of the lower part of the Yixian Formation still under debate.

Geographic Occurrence (not an all-inclusive list)

  • Liaoning Province, China
