General Info

Synonyms (older names and misidentifications in the literature)

  • 1928 Parapuzosia americana Scott & Moore

  • 1994 Parapuzosia americana Scott & Moore; Emerson et al.

Stratigraphic Occurrence

  • Middle Austin Group, formation is uncertain but is from about the level of the Jonah or Dessau Limestone (see below)
  • The one to the right came from the top of the Atco Limestone.

Age

  • The formation was unknown to Scott and Moore, but they indicated that the holotypes of both P. americana Scott & Moore and P. bosei Scott & Moore were associated with Texanites (Texanites) texanus (Roemer) [as "Mortoniceras texanum Roemer"] and Barroisiceras (Texasia) dentatocarinatum (Roemer) [as"Barroisiceras dentato-carinatum Roemer"].
  • T. (T.) texanus (Roemer) is a maker for the Early Santonian, while B. (T.) dentatocarinatum (Roemer) has been reported from the Jonah Formation and base of the Dessau Limestone, Late Santonian to earliest Campanian Stage.
  • Our feeling is that P. americana Scott & Moore is of probable Santonian Age.
  • The example from Dallas County suggests that P. americana ranges down into the late Coniacian Stage.

Geographic Occurrence (not an all-inclusive list)

  • Dallas County, Texas
  • South-central Texas
